Over the past several years, our dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to maintain the B.L.T. Rails to Trails, including managing and maintaining the garbage cans along the trail. Fundraised money has been used for the disposal of garbage, maintenance of the trash cans, and repairing lids that have unfortunately been subjected to vandalism.

Recently, however, we have faced growing challenges. Along with routine trash, our volunteers have encountered an increase in dangerous items such as household garbage, drug paraphernalia, broken glass, and alcohol bottles. This creates a serious health and safety risk for our volunteers, who generously give their time to keep the trails clean and safe.

Additionally, we have been informed that Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) will no longer collect the garbage from the remaining cans, as the trail is situated on provincial land. As a result, and to ensure our volunteers’ well-being, we have made the difficult decision to reduce the number of garbage cans along the trail. The remaining cans will be relocated to areas more accessible by vehicle, making it easier to maintain them.

We are currently in the process of selecting a third-party contractor to assist with garbage removal.

As members of the NS Trails Association, we adhere to the “Pack out what you pack in” principle. We encourage all trail users to respect this guideline, helping to keep our trails clean and safe for everyone.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding. Together, we can ensure that B.L.T. Rails to Trails remains a beautiful and safe space for the entire community to enjoy.
