Halifax, NS – Our hearts are truly full. The B.L.T. Rails to Trails Association has been overwhelmed by the incredible outpouring of support from our community. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve raised an astounding $12,000 to replace and repair the trail gates that play such an important role in keeping our trail safe and accessible.

We want to thank everyone who donated, shared our campaign, and offered words of encouragement. Your kindness reminds us just how much this trail means to so many people. It’s more than just a path; it’s a place where memories are made, friendships are built, and nature is cherished.

Our dedicated volunteers are now working closely with several fence companies to finalize a plan that ensures the gates meet both safety standards and the needs of our trail users. We’ve also heard your feedback—both from those who have asked why gates are needed and from those who’ve suggested removing them entirely. These conversations are important to us, and we want to take a moment to explain.

The B.L.T. Rails to Trails operates on Crown land, and our Letter of Authority requires us to minimize the risk of unauthorized vehicle access. Trail gates are an industry standard because they provide controlled access while allowing maintenance and emergency vehicles—everything from small utility vehicles to large fire trucks—to enter the trail when needed. Unfortunately, using rocks as an alternative isn’t practical; they can create hazards and can’t be quickly moved in an emergency.

Every year, emergencies arise on our trail and the Bluff Trail, requiring first responders and their specialized equipment. Whether it’s a fire, a rescue, or another critical situation, those moments matter, and the gates ensure help can arrive without delay.

This trail is for all of us—walkers, runners, cyclists, ATVs, and those seeking peace and connection in nature. Your support helps ensure it remains safe and accessible, no matter what.

From all of us at the B.L.T. Rails to Trails Association, thank you. Thank you for believing in this trail, for supporting our mission, and for helping us protect this beautiful space for future generations.
